Manhattan Housing Facts
Manhattan is home to 1.5 million residents, 19 percent of all New Yorkers. Although
the smallest percentage of people (20 percent) spend more than 50 percent of their
income on housing (compared to the New York City average of 23.7 percent), residents
here pay the highest amount for monthly rent compared with other boroughs.
Habitat-NYC got its first start in New York City on East 6th Street in the
Lower East Side of Manhattan. There, President Jimmy Carter visited his first
Habitat for Humanity building site and agreed to volunteer with other members
of his church. That was the beginning of the powerful partnership between Habitat
for Humanity and the Carters and the birth of the Jimmy Carter Work Project,
now held every year at different sites around the world.
In Manhattan, Habitat-NYC has focused on rehabilitating old buildings. Harlem
projects include 36 completed, rehabilitated condominium apartments on 134th
Street — the
site of the 2000 Jimmy Carter Work Project.
143 West 128th Street, Harlem, Manhattan
Habitat-NYC most recently completed project was to completely renovate
a five-story 19th century brick and brownstone apartment building to provide
quality, affordable homes for six Harlem families. The building includes homes
for different family sizes. Each unit was built to meet or exceed EnergyStar® environmental
standards, ensuring energy efficiency and saving the Habitat-NYC homeowners
an estimated 30% on their energy bill.
