Hart-Lafayette Homes
Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

Project Overview

Construction started in the summer of 2009 on this project, which includes four row houses at three separate sites in the historic community of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Each are four stories, for a total of 16 units that will be a mix of two- and three-bedroom condominiums. Each building features landscaped backyards.

Two of the buildings are adjacent at 512 and 514 Lafayette Ave. and single buildings are at 544 Lafayette Ave. and 118 Hart St.

These will be green buildings, enabling homeowners to save an estimated 30%or more on their utility bills. They will be built to ENERGY STAR standards, with ENERGY STAR appliances and lighting fixtures, high-efficiency boilers, energy-efficient windows and water-saving toilets, faucets and showerheads. Construction materials are non-toxic and sustainable.

Meet a Family Partner
Theresa Lyde, Hart-Lafayette

Theresa Lyde will never forget the night she was accepted as a Habitat-NYC homeowner.

Joy – and immense relief – swept over her as she returned to her crime-ridden neighborhood to tell her 17-year-old son Olufemi that they would soon be living in safety.

Later that night, as they slept, a young man was murdered on their doorstep.

That's why you'll see Theresa and Olufemi on Habitat-NYC construction sites whenever they can squeeze a few free minutes out of their lives. Every panel of drywall that goes up, every brush full of paint, every drop of sweat equity brings them a little closer to an affordable home and a safe haven.

The Lyde family will be living in a two-bedroom condominium, one of the 16 Habitat homes now under construction in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
