Your borrowing and charging actions create a credit history, which includes unpaid bills, collection agency notices, liens, legal judgments against you, and bankruptcy. Any lines of credit, and your payment habits, are also factored into your FICO score, which is used to evaluate your creditworthiness. FICO scores range from 300-850.
To obtain free annual copies of your credit report, go to annualcreditreport.com or call 877-322-8228. If you see any inaccuracies, notify each of the three credit bureaus that compile the reports:
Various companies will send you a FICO score as a “free trial” (check which bureau’s score they offer—you should know all three). Only creditkarma.com and quizzle.com don’t require a credit card for this service.
